Kajsa Balto is a Sámi artist born and raised in Oslo, a cultural background that has defined her facing yoik, the traditional Sámi form of song. Kajsa has created a musical platform where indigenous power and modernity merge, touching a wide range of listeners. Her critically acclaimed second album “Buot eallá” was released May 2020. Buot eallá means “everything is alive”, referring to the ancient Sámi belief that all significant natural objects, such as animals, plants, rocks and water, possess a soul. The album consists of yoiks collected from within Kajsa’s own family and new songs based on traditions from Sápmi (Sami territory), and is described as a powerful crossover between pop, world and folk music.
